M.D. (Psychiatry) Born on June 3, 1927 in Lucknow, Ont., he passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital on April 11, 2016 in his 89th year. Ron was the only child of Elmer and Agnes Johnston. He grew up in a town of 1,000 people where he worked at his father’s gas station and learned to shoot groundhogs on his family farm. Ron entered the University of Toronto in 1940, graduating in medicine and continued on to specialize in Psychiatry. He started practicing in 1951 in London, Ont., and settled at St. Catharines General Hospital in 1959 where he served the community of Niagara as chief psychiatrist for much of his 50 years of service, retiring at the age of 85. Ron was instrumental in helping many people of all ages cope with life’s challenges. Ron spotted Nancy working at the Queen St. Mental Health Hospital and fell madly in love. The psychiatrist and psychologist married in June 1951 and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this summer. Proud and caring father of the late Sue Johnston, Krista Johnston (Ivar Grimba) and Jessica Thomson (Chris). Dear Poppa of Valerie (Mark) and Erik Grimba and Jordan (Aley) and Devon Thomson. Also survived by a very loving extended family. Throughout his life he participated in many activities such as skiing, tennis, gardening and sailing. Ron embraced life to the fullest, travelling frequently to Europe, the Caribbean and South America with his family. Ron was an avid supporter of the arts including the Opera, National Ballet, both the Stratford and Shaw Festivals and Brock Centre for the Arts. We will always have fond memories of Ron in the garden, driving his Kaboda tractor up and down the valley. Cremation is to take place. The family plans to have a celebration of Ron’s life later in May. In lieu of flowers, donations may made out to “Brock University” with “Nancy Johnston Bursary in Psychology” in the reference line and mailed to Alumni Relations, Brock University, 1812 Sir Isaac Brock Way, St. Catharines, ON L2S 3A1.
